O australiano Michael Rogers (Team HTC-Columbia) venceu a Volta à Califórnia, depois de resistir aos ataques sofridos na oitava e última etapa, ganha pelo canadense Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Transitions). Os derradeiros 134,4 quilómetros, maioritariamente disputados num seletivo circuito com uma contagem de montanha pelo meio, permitiram vários ataques e levaram a muitas desistências – apenas 37 corredores terminaram! -, mas nenhum dos favoritos conseguiu deixar para trás Michael Rogers.
Se os principais adversários do australiano não tiveram passaporte para a fuga, cinco corredores conseguiram adiantar-se ao grupo principal, terminando a tirada com 28 segundos de vantagem sobre Rogers e companhia. Entre os fugitivos esteve melhor o canadense Ryder Hesjedal, mais rápido do que o norte americano George Hincapie (BMC) e do que o espanhol Carlos Barredo (Quick Step), segundo e terceiro, respectivamente.
Michael Rogers acabou a Volta à Califórnia com nove segundos de vantagem sobre o segundo, David Zabriskie (Garmin-Transitions). O triplo vencedor da corrida, Levi Leipheimer (RadioShack), não foi além do terceiro lugar, a 25 segundos do vencedor.
